The plate carrier is a key component in flexographic printing, serving as a cylindrical sleeve designed for the installation and fixation of flexible printing plates. It enables quick replacement and has replaced the traditional integrated metal plate roller.
Its core features are efficiency and flexibility. Compared to the heavy traditional plate cylinders, the plate sleeves can reduce weight by 50%-70%, allowing single-person handling for easy loading and unloading. The plate change time can be shortened by 80%, and storage space is significantly reduced.
Working Principles and Composition:
Simply put, a platemount sleeve is a hollow roller that operates on the principle of an air-driven shaft. It is typically divided into three layers from the inside out.
*Inner layer (matrix): made of composite materials such as glass fiber, providing strong structural support.
*Intermediate layer (optional): some sleeves have a compressible honeycomb or foam structure, which is used to absorb printing pressure and improve printing accuracy.
*Outer layer (surface layer): directly in contact with the printing plate.
\When in use, place the sleeve on the inflation shaft of the printing machine, and when compressed air is introduced, the sleeve will slightly expand or suspend, making it easier to move and position axially. After the gas is cut off, the sleeve will be firmly fixed on the shaft. Afterwards, use adhesive tape to stick the cut single resin printing plate onto the surface of the sleeve, and then it can be printed on the machine
Main Categories and Applications:
According to different printing and precision requirements, there are also different types of laminating sleeves, with the main difference being their surface material:
Type
Surface characteristics
Applicable scenarios
Hard surface sleeve
Hard surface and impact resistance
Used for printing thicker printing plates (1.7mm-7mm), mainly used for packaging printing on corrugated boxes, thick cardboard, and other packaging with low precision requirements.
Soft elastic surface sleeve (air cushion sleeve)
The surface is compressible polyurethane foam, which has cushioning property
Specially designed for high-quality and delicate thin plate printing, such as labels and flexible packaging. It can better control the increase of dot count and print clear highlight dots.
The difference from seamless plate sleeves
In flexographic printing, there is also a seamless plate sleeve, which is often confused with the other type. The core difference between them is:
Platen sleeve: serves as a "carrier," with single-sheet, seam-containing traditional printing plates adhered to its surface.
Seamless printing plate sleeve: The printing plate is directly fabricated on the sleeve, forming a seamless sleeve-shaped printing plate with no visible joint marks during printing.
